
Filmmaker Quentin Lee founded Margin Films in 1996 in Los Angeles, California, when they was an MFA graduate film student at UCLA. They founded in originally to make their first feature, Shopping for Fangs, (co-directed by Justin Lin) which premiered at Toronto International Film Festival as part of Perspective Canada in 1997.

Prior to founding Margin Films, Quentin Lee made a feature by compiling his UCLA student short films together. The result was Flow, premiered at Vancouver International Film Festival in 1995 and restored in 2022:
